A Glimpse into the Past Exploring Traverse City: Beyond the Northern Michigan Asylum. The Asylum was established in the late 19th century in the year 1885, the Northern Michigan Asylum was founded with a noble mission: to provide compassionate care and treatment for individuals suffering from mental illness. Designed by renowned Detroit architect Gordon W. Lloyd, the sprawling complex was inspired by the principles of the Kirkbride Plan—a progressive approach to asylum design that emphasized natural light, fresh air, and therapeutic landscapes. This asylum was the third established in the State of Michigan. The site for the third asylum was decided by officials in Lansing at the behest of our State Representative and founding father of Traverse City, Mr. Perry Hannah. Hannah's hope was that this new industry to the area would help transition Traverse City from a fading lumber town to a provider of medical services at a large scale. His hopes were proven right and Traverse City now boasts on the grounds of the old Asylum, the region medical center, Munson Medical Center. Architectural Marvels The Northern Michigan Asylum is a prime example of Victorian-Italianate architecture, characterized by its grandiose façade, intricate detailing, and expansive grounds. The main building, with its distinctive bricks purchased from the Markham Brickyard, located just a few miles to the north in Greilickville, create an exterior with towering cupolas. The structures exude an air of elegance and grandeur, while the surrounding cottages and pavilions offer a glimpse into life within the asylum walls. Historic Significance Throughout its storied history, the Northern Michigan Asylum played a pivotal role in the treatment and care of individuals with mental illness. At its peak, the facility housed hundreds of patients and employed a dedicated staff of doctors, nurses, and caregivers. Despite the challenges and controversies that marked its existence, the asylum remained a beacon of hope and healing for countless individuals and families in need. This beacon was spearhead by Dr. Decker Munson. Munson was the first superintendent of the psychiatric hospital and believed and implement treatments that paralleled "beauty if therapy." He used gardens and work outside to help restore a patients well being. With the expansive grounds and buildings it also was the center for care provided to highly contagious illnesses such as the Spanish Influenza, Polio, Tuberculosis, Typhoid, diphtheria, and more. Sadly, this also means that the numbers of loss of life on the grounds was quite high with a potter field established on the eastside of the campus, where at one time the Nurses Dormitories were located and serves as a State of Michigan office. Preservation Efforts In recent years, the Northern Michigan Asylum, now called the Grand Traverse Commons, has undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to ongoing preservation efforts and adaptive reuse projects. • Children and Spirit Visitations

I love hosting children on my tours because they often share stories of their spirit visitations with me. They are full of energy, vibrancy, and stories to tell. And they do share their stories, most enthusiastically. In my line of work as an historian, folklorist, and paranormal enthusiast, what attracts my attention most is when children share their stories about seeing a ghost. Their Ghost Story Children and spirit visitation stories have variances and each child's is unique in some ways. The similarities in the patterns is what I will touch on with this blog post are the following: the child is younger when the encounters begin, usually before school age. The child does not know this person or place this person as familiar to them. And last, the specter is often someone that becomes a companion or observer of the child and is known to the family but not the child. My Nephew's Story As a young child, my nephew "J" would sit just outside his closet and just chatter away. My sister, at first thought J was just playing with an imaginary friend. When asked, J would say that he was just playing with his toys, but has he grew a bit older and his vocabulary became more evolved, J started to share what he was speaking about during his playtime as he sat outside his bedroom closet. One particular conversation of note was when J shared with his mother that the man in the closet had hurt himself. This worried my sister a bit and she tried to press J on how the man had hurt himself. J went on to tell that the man had blood all over his wrists and he had used a knife to cut himself. J would have been about 3 years old at this point. We may have dismissed this as scary movies influencing the imagination of a child, but at that age, nothing at this level of graphic horror was in J's circle of influence. After several more descriptions that exceeded what any child of that age could imagine and J starting to express fear from the "bubble people" my sister began to suspect that J was sensitive to the paranormal. Carefully my sister would guide J through his first encounters with the paranormal. Afterall, she and her siblings had grown up experiencing similar encounters with spirit. This author's family has a sensitivity to the paranormal. We attribute this to my mother's side of the family, who descended from Ireland then Scotland then the United States to settle in Kentucky. A family matriarch, Addie Belle, on my mother's side was known to be a witch out of Kentucky. A legacy no doubt earned by her abilities as a natural healer, sensitivity to the paranormal, and a knack for having predictive dreams. J was just the next generation to inherit whatever gifts Annie Belle herself carried. J would go on and experience other encounters as a young child including spirit he described as bubble people. In the paranormal community, we call spirit that take this initial form orbs which are commonly described as balls of light. However, this author believes, that the more sensitive, or the more open that door in one's mind is to the paranormal, the more defined the orbs can become. Even taking the form of spirit in their more human state. J would describe the faces coming out of the orbs. Naturally, at first this was upsetting to my young nephew, but my sister, with all of her vast experiences with the paranormal was able to assure him that what he was seeing was part of the natural order of the world-even if it is hard to explain or find reason for how it unfolds in our lives. The others Because of my own experiences with the paranormal and love of history, it seemed that I was destined to operate ghost tours in my hometown of Traverse City Michigan. When the tours began, I didn't have a lot of expectations. I had a bit of hope. The main wish was that those they came on my tour would love what I had created and found the time shared with me to be worth it and just plain fun. After 7 years of hosting guests to Traverse City, I have accumulated an assortment of interesting encounters with my guests. My young guests and their ghostly encounters shared I find to be the most chilling and memorable. As I share my ghost stories, my young guests enthusiastically share theirs. As they do I see comparisons to my own growing up as well as my nieces and nephews. Their stories start usually the same way- a person would come to visit them usually while they were in their rooms or outside playing. This person would visit and watch mostly. Sometimes these visitors would speak to them, sometimes they would move an object as well. At some point as they grew older, this person would stop visiting. Then, as families often do, family photos and stories would be told and my younger guests would finally become aware of who this visitor was and the relation they had with this spirit. Often times, it was a loved one that had passed before they were born. A grandparent or immediate family member. And the only way the child would know about them was when the family pulled out the pictures of the loved one that had passed on and shared stories. Chills At this point, I get the chills. These type of stories told by my young guests always mirror the same type of experience time after time. When the frequency of these stories shared by me started to accumulate over the years, I realized this phenomenon is quite present and experienced by many children throughout the world. How does one explain a child that accurately describes a loved one that has passed on before they were even born? Yet, somehow these children can describe this loved one or pick them out in family photos even though they have no knowledge of that loved one and have never met them. Some can even tell their parents the visitors name. Some can recall details told to them by these spirits that the child would never have known. The chills continue when the child seems to be a conduit for transmitting a loved ones final message. The wonder I feel in these moments just reinstalls my belief that loved ones make themselves known from the beyond to us-we just have to listen. Why Children? It's a good question. I like to think the ability to perceive something on the fringe of our reality is innate to all on this plain of existence we call Earth. This perception somehow gets lost to quite a big portion of the population. Why this happens is anyone's best guess, this author will weigh into this debated topic and theorize that it is simply a part of our minds, a door so-to-speak, that closes. Like the perception for some to have the ability to smell odors that others cannot or to see a shade of red that others cannot perceive. This door when open allows some to perceive the paranormal while others close this door and this fringe reality on the edges of our scope of what we see is lost. How does the door close? Some believe that we get too entrenched in our modern lifestyle and the hustle of life and our attention drawn toward screens causes the door to close. Some believe that we enter this life from another plain of existence, and we are closer to it as a child or as an adult as we draw closer to our death. Some think that we have an overlap of dimensions and one just makes itself known and then disappears again. The person just has to be at the right place and the right time. No special abilities needed. It could be a combination of all three or one on its own. The theories are out there and difficult to prove. But what I will tell you, Dear Reader, from my own experiences and listening for decades others share with me their paranormal experiences. I lean toward all three. In the case of the subject of this post, I see that children can see and perceive the world different than adults. As we raise our offspring, we tell them and show them just simply how the world must be. A person that hears the buzzing, sees yellow, and feels a sting never thinks anything other than a bee after all. Children seem closer to something that for adults seems beyond us. And if a loved one has passed on and the adults they care for have that door closed, then the next avenue for connection becomes their family member's children. Conclusion Children represent possibilities in so many ways to our species. They see the world different and this may open them to being more perceptive to the paranormal unfolding's that occur every day. Loved ones may come to children to visit and to see how they fare or to relay unfinished business or thoughts that adults may be unable to hear. But I can tell you this, Dear Reader, of all the chilling ghost stories told to me by my ghost tour guests, the children's stories freak me out the most! Their quite voices tell of matters and people they simply should not and cannot know about and yet do. How can you explain that!? I hope you enjoyed my blog post. Please leave a comment if you have thoughts that can add to this topic. ~Dez FAQ When do children stop having these paranormal experiences where loved ones come to them? I cannot tell you a specific age, but I find that the children that share their encounters usually had them before they started school. For my family, we start experiencing the paranormal quite young and continue on throughout our lives. The only time it seems the door closes for myself, is during times of trauma or extreme attention to the more material part of our world. Is this something to be scared or worried about? No. If you do not want these type of interactions with loved ones that have passed on, many take the position that one must simply not give any attention to it. With no attention paid, the activity simply fades away with time. Is a child's visitations always paranormal in nature? Sometimes a child just has a healthy imagination. Even I have had imaginary friends growing up. How to differentiate is by the imaginary friend clearly having data and facts attached to it that lead the adults to conclude this is a spirit instead of something made up. Sometimes, there are psychiatric parameters at play as well. Seeking medical help for a child is never a bad idea to get a good understanding what the child is going through and if there is anything to assist the child through this part of their life.

  • Explore Haunted London England on Spooky Ghost Tours

Welcome, brave souls, to the eerie streets of London, where history and hauntings intertwine to create an atmosphere ripe for ghostly encounters. Join me, Dez on a spine-tingling journey as we venture into the heart of the city's most haunted locations, guided by the flickering light of lanterns and the whispers of restless spirits. From ancient castles to shadowy alleyways, London is a treasure trove of paranormal activity waiting to be unearthed. My spooky journey of ghost tours in London England was full of folklore, ghost stories, and walking in the shadows of the deep, rich history of this Capital. I enjoyed encounters with so many fun and engaging tour guides that were talented storytellers creating an entertaining atmosphere full of ghostly lore that included Jack the Ripper, William Shakespeare, Anne Boleyn, St. James Palace, the Tower of London, and more. All told in the shadows of London's fog filled nights in the city's alleys and historical centers. Ready to learn more about the ghost tours of London and choose your next adventure through the lens of a Ghost Tour owner herself? Let's begin! London: Ghost Tour on a Bus My first stop in London, after visiting 221B Baker street, was to hop on the Ghost Bus. This tour was on one of the famous double decker buses. This brave soul chose the upper deck and was looking over her shoulder the entire time to see what ghostly specter was hitchhiking a ride next to her. The ride was everything I could hope for and more! And this ghost tour participant highly recommends this tour if only for the hijinks and shenanigans our driver and guide got up to. It was also a fast paced and exciting adventure filled with theatrics, jokes, chilling ghost stories and more! What I loved the most was the ambience of the bus itself. The old fashioned mode of transportation with a variety of seating arrangements for groups large and small. The dim lighting that never quite chased the shadows away from within the bus. One had only to sit back and watch London pass by, ferried by the competent local driver below, while enjoying the onboard entertainment via the television monitors (which play out some of the better theatrics found in the night) as well as a tour guide that never stood still a moment while the tour unfolded in the foggy, London night and from within the shadowed bus' confines. As a tour owner myself, I was envious of the presentation, the energy of my tour guide, and the ambience of the double decker bus. I would highly recommend this tour company's Ghost Bus Tour. Quick Summary The entertainment is theatrical in nature and the focus is toward a moving theater on wheels. If true local ghost stories toward history and in depth paranormal discovery is more to taste, this may not be the tour for you. I would say this is family friendly, but the bus lighting is dim, periods of complete darkness, and the theatrical elements may leave younger children a bit on the scared side from this tour. For adults, sit back and get ready for some laughs and just a genial spooky good time. Overall, my experience of taking this tour left me wanting more. Which recommends itself to a fun time had by myself. Enjoy the Ghost Bus while in London, Edinburgh, or York. Ghost, Ghouls and Gallows Walking Tour with Boat Ride on the Thames My next stop in London was on the Ghost, Ghouls and Gallows Walking tour with an adventurous boat ride on the Thames as well. Get ready for incredible night photography shots of Tower Bridge, Tower of London, and St. James Palace. My tour guide was a doctoral student of history studying in London and was very well informed on the history of this Capital of England. I am an avid historian and even I was amazed at the new history I learned on this ghost tour. Plus, given my curious nature, I explored further the history and lore presented during this tour well after the tour had concluded. The ghost stories ranged from the haunting of St. James Palace and its royal members that resided there to Anne Boleyn's ghost walking to the gallows at the Tower of London. The tour guide captures a group picture of everyone on the tour at St. James Palace. I was feeling shy and self conscious about my lack of make-up and did not participate and the tour guide was very gracious about it. I felt this was a good sign on how accommodating the tour is for guests that have different needs and may just want to lurk in the shadows of the ghost tour. What I loved the most was the easy pace through some of the Buckingham Palace gardens leading us right up to the dock where the guide handled everything needed for tour guests to board. The trip along the Thames at night was not to be missed and I was in awe of the chance to take a selfie at the famous Tower Bridge (which is often mistaken for London Bridge). The tour guide was spot on when suggesting the perfect location just after exiting the boat for the perfect selfie. So extra bonus on the guide trying to help guests get those great Instagram worthy shots for lasting memories. As a tour owner myself, I was envious of the rich historical sites visited but not entered, the energy of my tour guide was laid back but engaging, and the ambience of the tour was not rushed, comforting, with rich storytelling that unfolded at an enjoyable pace. Quick Summary The entertainment is geared toward true local ghost stories with depth of ghostly lore explored with the vivid history of the London sites visited expanding the tales with depth and intrigue. I would say this is family friendly, but the walk is a bit on the long side for the younger persons in the family. The meeting point also differs on where the tour ends just outside the Tower of London, but fear not, the Underground is located just across the street within a few short minutes from the Tower of London. Overall, my experience of taking this tour left me wanting more of it. I enjoyed the tour and am thankful I was able to attend. I do wish that entrance to the Tower of London had capped this tour. But I also understand that including an interior tour of the Tower of London late at night is not feasible. For this, I will be including a Tower of London Tour that I would advise that guests on the walking ghost tours of London take. That way there is a trifecta of experiences that best accumulate a depth of visit to these sites. The ride on the Thames, the view of the Tower of London at night, and then the next day, the exploration of the Tower of London internally. Have fun! I know you will if you combine these two tours in London. As an extra bonus and to save funds, consider the duel Jack the Ripper and Tower of London tours I included below. Jack the Ripper Walking Tour in London This tour has come highly recommended by my own guests on my own ghost tours in Traverse City Michigan. For that alone, I have included this macabre tour that explores the grisly murders of London's most notorious serial killer. The tour guides are clever, thoughtful historians that engaged their guests to ponder the mystery behind Jack the Ripper legacy of death and mayhem in the dark streets of Victorian London. As the tour unfolds, the sites where the murders take place are explored and the details and theories recollected by the guides to draw their guests back into time when "murder" was screamed from darken alleys and the panicked, hush of London's citizens fell under the grip of fear at the hands of a killer. The stories here are centered around Jack the Ripper and his victims. Which understandably has guests gathered around the tour guide hanging on the tour guides every word. The tension from time-to-time is broken by some well timed and tasteful humor which keeps the guests on this emotional roller coaster of an experience. The tour is 2 hours in length that balances suspense, humor, and the grisly facts of the murders leading its guests to want more when the tour concludes. As a tour owner myself, the materials from the historical unfolding's of these crimes is a rich platform to create a tour that is engaging and worth the time to explore with the right guides of course. Jack the Ripper Tour in London has been a stand by for many decades when it comes to a walking tour that best represents London. This is a must not miss tour when visiting. Be warned, this tour is very popular so the moment you make up your mind to visit London, book this tour. Good luck and may Jack the Ripper's spirit pass you by! Quick Summary The entertainment is geared toward the macabre due to the nature of a serial killer and its victims and may not be suitable for all. Ages limits are in effect for this tour. I would say this tour is a must not miss when visiting London. Please book the moment you find your plans set in motion to visit London. Overall, this tour ticks off all of the checklist for a person seeking mystery, macabre, rich history, and some humor to keep you on your toes. Good luck traveling back into the Victorian Times of murder, mayhem and mystery that is Jack the Ripper. Overall, my experience of just how difficult booking the popular Jack the Ripper Tour was, I have created a listing of several other tour companies that provide tours on the subject. If mysteries are truly your hobby, the Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes tour may be just up your dark alley of London. Have fun! My visit to London England was full of mystery, murder, and ghostly lore and that was just on my tours! I enjoyed my many explorations of this city before heading off to Edinburgh Scotland for more ghostly tales! Be sure to follow my helpful tips when booking! Some of these tours are very popular and sell out, some need an additional daytime experience to round out the ghostly tales with the history, but all were enjoyable to take part in during my visit to haunted London England. Enjoy your visit and here are some FAQ and helpful tips below. ~Dez Tour Guide and Owner of Haunted Traverse Tours Traverse City Michigan FAQ What is the best ghost tour in London? Shopping: Some great stops for souvenirs in downtown Traverse City include Momentum Outfitters, My Secret Stash, Nifty Things, plus Critters Clothing and Souvenirs. Here is a helpful guide to learn more about shopping in downtown Traverse City. When I was a little girl, downtown Traverse City looked a lot different! Lining Front Street were the big box stores, J.C. Penneys and Millikens. Horizon Bookstore has taken the place of J.C. Penneys now and is one of my favorite stops to pick up local author's books and other great, hard-to-find reads. Oh and stop in at their cafe for some yummy peanut butter cookies and lattes. #3: Hike or Bike the Outdoors Traverse City has some of the best-groomed trails in Northern Michigan! The TART Trail is a great way to soak up the sun, generate that breeze, and paddle your way into an adventure. You are going to need a bike! Hiking Trails on the Boardman River Trail off of Beitner Road will get you an adventure hiking right next to the Boardman River Rapids. I love this hike for the ease of the journey and the sound of the rapids accompanying most of my hike. The North Country Trail is another great trail to hop on for a longer hike. My favorite section is the Valley of the Giants which is located about 15 minutes southeast of Traverse City on the NCT. Sleeping Bear Dunes offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and 100 miles of hiking trails. It is only a short drive from Traverse City. Hike the dunes while you are there or make a day of it by exploring the museums and shops in nearby villages. Bike Rentals from The River Outfitters Traverse City Location: An assortment of bike options are available to you from children's bikes to hybrid bikes to beach cruisers. When you rent from the River Outfitters, just tell them what kind of biking you are looking for and they will get you to the right spot. • Visiting During the Cherry Festival

Plan your visit and explore Traverse City during the National Cherry Festival July 1-8, 2023. Let's get started planning your vacation during the National Cherry Festival held in Traverse City, Michigan! Hello! Des here, your local tour guide on the Historical Ghost Tour in Downtown Traverse City. Every year while walking the streets hosting my guests and squeezing in every ounce of spirited fun, I see some observations that visitors to the area could sure use. So here are my tip, tricks, and things to do during the National Cherry Festival that are a must-see and do! I hope this is helpful when planning your visit during the Cherry Festival week here in Traverse City Michigan. Tip 1 - Book Your Hotel, Airbnb, or Campsite Now! It is a busy time for your room providers understandably. When planning your visit to the 97th National Cherry Festival. Plan your stay first. The NCF is hosting some big music acts like Flo Rida, a blazing air show with the Thunderbirds, and family fun events. This amazing entertainment attracts many guests to the area and for good reason! Tip 2 - Arrive early for the Airshow! The Air Show is the first weekend of the NCF.No need to worry about what is the best spot, if you make your way down to sit along West Grand Traverse Bay, you are sure to see the planes in action. You can choose to be right on the beach to the west of the Festival's Open Space or be adventurous and lose the big crowd by sitting on the south side of Grandview Parkway in the grassy areas there. My local tip is to just make sure to give yourself plenty of time to find parking and a spot to sit, pack sunblock, and a cooler full of snacks and refreshments. Also, keep a look out for the Coast Guard Ship parked north of the Open Space Festival Area. This serves as a point of reference for the pilots. Think of the Coast Guard Ship like it is the center stage at a theater only for the airshow instead. The planes use this to line up their flight paths. If you do have time, walk to the open space (the heart of the festival), grab yourself some food from the local restaurants, grab a beer at the beer tent and give yourself some time to shop at the local vendors as well. There are food vendors such as pretzels and ice cream that travel along West Grand Traverse Bay along the beach. Keep a sharp eye out for those portable snacks. And of course, the local kids will be out to sell cold soda and water for all the big events during the week. (This is a very affordable option for beverages in Traverse City during the National Cherry Festival:) "The Cherry Festival has so many lasting memories for me growing up. I wouldn't miss it for the world. My favorite memory is the year my father planned to win us the Guinness Record Largest Cherry Pie. And we did it!" – Desirae, Tour Guide Haunted Traverse Tours Tip 3 - It's about the Food, am I right? At the Open Space (the space full of festival activities right off of the shores of West Grand Traverse Bay), you can start out by purchasing a cup of sweet cherries. From there, you can visit the restaurant's booths for a delicious lunch or dinner. As a local, you will find me grabbing Chinese from China Fair and heading off to the BINGO Tent! There are some food trucks on site too such as elephant ears and turkey legs..yum! Downtown has some great sit-down restaurants, if you are looking to keep a little out of the crowds but stay in the vicinity of downtown Traverse City check out the following places. Sleders Restaurant (burgers and fish fryes) Bubbas Burgers (Amazing Fries and a variety of burgers) Two Slices at the Coinslot (Eastern Coast Pizza) Pangeas Pizza (Eat on the Roof with a view of the bay and Open Space) Tip 4 - Need some Air Conditioning and Rest Visiting the National Cherry Festival can have you out in the sun for lengthy times. If you need some quiet, rest, and cool down, visit the two theaters in the heart of downtown Traverse City-the State Theater and Bijou by the Bay! Enjoy an affordable movie, cool AC, and delicious popcorn to take a rest in the hottest part of the afternoon. The great part about the Bijou by the Bay is it is just a short walk to the east from the Open Space. The State Theater is located on Front Street pulling you further away from the center of the festivities. Tip 5 - Parades and Fireworks! There are two parades. The Consumers Energy Community Royale Parade and the DTE Energy Foundation Cherry Royale Parade. The parade routes can get packed on Front Street by the parades' audiences. If you can only get to one, I would recommend the Cherry Royale Parade held on July 8th. This parade will have the winning floats as determined during the Royale Parade held on July 6th (The Royale Parade is where you are going to see all the local school floats go by). When picking out a parade spot. Come with a blanket, chairs, sunblock, and cash to buy treats sold along the route. This local would advise you to think further along the parade route and even to the very end of it. Easier to get in and out with your vehicle and pack up and be on your way! For the Fireworks on July 4th and the Finale Fireworks on July 8, grab a spot similar to what I recommended for viewing the airshow. Traffic can be thick after it concludes, so plan to stick around after and visit the Open Space or Arnold's Amusement Park located right across from the Open Space in the heart of Downtown Traverse City. Get Ready for Lots of Cherries, Sun, and Fun! I hope these helpful tips, tricks, and things to do get your planning off to a great start. Here is the Cherryfestival.org website to see the whole list of activities unfolding during this festive week including a volleyball tournament, cornhole tournament, and Ultimate Air Dogs (Fly Fido! Fly!). So remember, the lowest-cost beverages are sold by the local kids raising money for themselves. Food galore is to be had by all the food trucks and local restaurants found at the Open Space. Give yourself plenty of time to find parking (try to shuttle in if you can) and to find a spot to view the airshows, parades, and fireworks. Be sure to grab that cup of sweet cherries too! And have fun! Thanks for visiting my hometown! Oh and if you want to come out for a tour with me, we can talk about the spirits of Traverse City too! ~Desirae Haunted Traverse Tour Company Owner and Guide.

  • 5 Out-of-the-Way Things to Do Near Traverse City Michigan

When visiting Traverse City some guests want to stretch their wings and explore things to do near Traverse City Michigan. Many guests to the area make a mistake by not giving what lies beyond Traverse City's limits enough time to truly explore this visual stunning area. As a local and tour guide of Haunted Traverse Tours, here are some tips for 5 out of the way, but fun things-to-do in the Leelanau County area (just a short drive from Traverse City). So, get ready for historic lighthouses, beautiful Grand Traverse Bay scenic views, some local favorites for fun dining, and more! Here are 5 Fun Things to Do Near Traverse City Michigan! #5. Cherry Orchard Visits! Let's start out our Things to Do Near Traverse City Michigan by exploring what the area is so well known for... our fudge! Just kidding, it's our cherry production. Fun fact, this area produces 40% of all of the tart cherries consumed in the United States. Cherry Orchards host a variety of entertaining options from Spring through the Fall. In mid-May, stop at one of the many cherry orchards that dot this part of Northern Michigan. Get ready starting in mid-July through the rest of the summer for some u-pick them options too! In the fall, many orchards will host fun, fall events. Hallstedt Homestead Cherries is a u-pick 'em option on Leelanau Peninsula. Plus, when the blossoms are in bloom, guests can leave with their very own cherry blossom bouquet! #4. Wine Tasting! Traverse City and its surrounding area are an ideal destination for wine production, offering a unique combination of natural advantages on the 45th parallel as well as a thriving viticultural community. The regions' climate is a temperate and moderated ecology making the weather in Northern Michigan perfect for growing cherries and grapes. This makes it a great location for a vacation too regardless of the season. If this local may make some suggestions on where to get the most tastings for the least number of stops, I would suggest the following: Black Star Farms, The Leelanau Peninsula Location. I love hopping on wine tours, but when I only have time to visit one or two wineries, this one is one of my favorites because of the beauty of the estate, the variety of wines, and its nearness to Traverse City (only 13 miles from Traverse City). Leelanau Wine Cellars, Leelanau Peninsula. I love the tasting room located right on the water with large viewing windows and an outdoor seating area as well. A large option of tastings with over 60 wines, translates to the most fastidious wine lovers finding a bottle to go back home with. LWC does take reservations for the tasting room with a modest cost to enjoy such beautiful, big, bouquets of wine tastings. Plus, a bonus complimentary glass of wine for visiting! #3. The Grand Traverse Lighthouse just north of Northport Michigan Grand Traverse Lighthouse: As one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes, the GT Lighthouse is located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula about a 50-minute drive from Traverse City Michigan. Hop on a tour or walk the site on a self-guided adventure. Get ready for stunning views of Lake Michigan! Plus, appease your curiosity with a visit on site to the Fog Signal Building and the Shipwreck Exhibition. This lighthouse is located right next to a playground and picnic area, so think ahead and pack a picnic for lunch. #2 Glen Arbor Glen Arbor is a sleepy village nestled in the curves of Crystal River, the sand dunes of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and the edge of Lake Michigan. Glen Arbor hosts a variety of recreational activities, but the shopping is where it is at in the town. Guests to Glen Arbor can explore shops specializing in Jewelry to clothing to gift shops! There is so much to see, but what you won't see are big box stores. Don't forget to stop into the Cherry Republic to get your chocolate covered cherries! Glen Arbor is also a great stop for some fun dining too! I suggest Art's Tavern for some local grub since 1934. If you are looking for food and some great beer options, the Broomstack Kitchen & Taphouse for Dine-in or carry out (maybe to picnic at the edge of Lake Michigan perhaps;) #1. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park A short drive away is the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This national park has been voted the #1 national park in the nation! How exciting! Which means get ready for the hikes, the views, and the trek back in time to a simpler era of Michigan. I would start your visit at the Phillip A. Hart visitors center or just wing it by exploring the many trails (over 100 miles), hiking up the Sleeping Bear Dunes' Dunes, or visiting the Maritime Museum in Glen Haven. If this local may make one suggestion, hike up the easy trail to the Empire Bluffs for a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan. Beaches are aplenty but beware of hiking down the dunes to the shore of Lake Michigan. Many tourists have been stranded at the bottom and been in need of official rescue and the price tag is billed to the tourist to provide this service. Don't worry about not identifying this risky part of the National Park, the warning signs posted cannot be missed by visitors. One other helpful hint for those that may have tired legs, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a great option for an enjoyable drive under a shady maple tree canopy while still seeing a panoramic view of Lake Michigan. Summary In summary, when staying in Traverse City, hop on M-22 and head north for a day of fun in Leelanau County. This can be a full day, half day, or just a jot out for some food and wine before you head back in Traverse City. Be sure to take advantage of roadside stands you'll drive by. Just don't be afraid to explore the unbeaten but not to be beat path that is Leelanau Peninsula! ~Desirae Hello! Desirae is a tour guide in the beautiful Traverse City, Michigan area. I love all things haunted, history, or hun....err..I mean fun! Please let me know if I can help answer any questions about my hometown Traverse City. What are you waiting for!? Here ghosty....ghosty...ghosty! Looking for a good ghost story in the area you are visiting? Look no further! Here are my top 5 ghost tours to hop on in Michigan for a spooky good time. 5. Haunts of Mackinac I remember the early days of this tour. I packed up my family and headed up to the Straights of Michigan for the one-off, candle-guided ghost tour on Mackinac Island. It was early on in its day and now it has become a 90-minute walking tour on the island. Here is the Haunts of Mackinac website. 4. The Whitney in Detroit The Mansion is reported to be haunted by lumber baron David Whitney Jr, the wealthiest man in Detroit at the time. His wife Flora is known to make her appearance from time to time as well. I am adding this stop on my Midwest Ghost Trip so you know that I fully back a visit for dinner and a tour at the Whitney in Detroit! 3. Tours Around Michigan's Ghost Tour I have yet to make it down to this tour, but I have met the organizer and if her tours are half as much fun as she is, guests of Tours Around Michigan will be having a fun time for sure! Grand Rapids is one of the more popular cities to visit in Michigan and was just voted the #1 must-visit location in the state. Plus Grand Rapids is also leading the way as one of the best places to live in Michigan. But does this mean that it will top the list of best places to haunt as well? Take this tour and then please let me know in the comments, how haunted is Grand Rapids!? Here is the website. 2. Eloise Asylum I am including a paranormal tour of the haunted Eloise Asylum. However, this leans more toward paranormal investigation led by an investigator. So not your typical ghost story-led tour. This location does provide history tours as well. One of the original asylums that were constructed in Michigan. With so many tragic deaths and circumstances the living were consumed with at this site, it is a must-see for any paranormal enthusiast! Click here to visit the Elosie Asylum website. 1. Haunted Traverse Shameless plug. I know! But I believe in Traverse City's ghosts 100%. The hauntings unfolding in the area are bringing it to the lore of Michigan. If you want to find out why a girl is haunting a local breakfast hotspot with this spirited apparition's cold spots, do come out for the Historical Ghost Lantern Tour in Traverse City, Michigan. So, what do you think? Do you have a favorite tour in Michigan? Leave a comment and this ghost lover will hop on your recommendations. I am always looking for a spooky good time! ~Desirae Need a place to stay in Traverse City!? Here you go! I would look for a hotel right on Grand Traverse Bay for the best views of the water. We do have 3 nice hotels within walking distance of downtown Traverse City including the Delamar (right on the bay), Hotel Indigo (with some bay views), and Park Place Hotel (the higher rooms may have some impeded views of the bay). Thank you for visiting Traverse City! I have included a Booking.com widget to help with your planning. I do receive an affiliate commission if you do use this link at no cost to you. What do I do with the funds? I fund my paranormal travels that I blog about right here at hauntedtraverse.com! Thank you again and happy travels!

  • The Haunted State of Michigan

Most people don't put hauntings and ghostly happenings and Traverse City, Michigan in the same sentence. But for the locals that live here year-round, you'll find us hard-pressed to NOT find us chatting up the local bar scene without talking about the spirits. And we're not talking about the wine variety coming out of our local orchards. The State of Michigan and its assortment of small communities have a history of leading our union's ghost sitings and paranormal lore. And here is why! History is one factor in why Michigan is Haunted. Most historians start mankind's history in the Great Lakes region with the recent tribes of Native Americans that came here hundreds of years ago plus those tribes' ancestors that came here thousands of years ago. Several tribes call the state home. The three largest are the Ojibwe (AKA Chippewa), The Odawa (Ottowa), and the Potawatomi (Bode'wadmi). There are archeological sites in the state that indicate large stone and earth structures archeologists believed were created thousands of years ago for hunting purposes. Also, Michigan has several stone henges found throughout the state including one with a mastodon etched into one of the large boulders found at the bottom of Grand Traverse Bay. With this well-established civilization that goes back thousands of years, the history of Michigan is filled with the tragic and deadly circumstances of its residents. The Michigan Triangle Start in Chicago, Illinois, and draw a line up to Marquette, Michigan, and then down to Detroit, Michigan before returning back to Chicago and you have the general geographic region that makes up the Michigan Triangle. This area is full of shipwrecks, plane crashes, and strange occurrences all unfolding from unexplained circumstances. Plus, don't get us Michiganders started on the UFO sightings! All of this adds up to incredible stories of maritime lore. Many ships have traveled miles of ocean only to meet their end in one of the 5 Great Lakes of Michigan. Geology of Michigan Water is everywhere in Michigan. Shaped by glaciers about 10,000 years ago, our water system is rather young and big. We are ranked on the list of the largest 15 lakes in the world and the only peninsulas of its kind in the entire world! If a drop of water were to start its journey in our largest lake, Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in this large, watershed system, it would take over 500 years for the water to empty into the St. Lawrence River. Water plays a very important part in Paranormal happenings. Many paranormal investigators correlate water with spiritual activity because of the conductivity of spiritual energy. Essentially, it serves as a battery storing up potential paranormal energy to facilitate manifestations by spirit. Meaning that more people tend to see apparitions around water sources. And Michigan has 94,000 square miles, 6 quadrillion gallons of water in its 5 lakes. Also, it has 9,402 miles of shoreline. All of the statistics do not even include the numerous interior lakes. Residents and visitors to this part of the world find themselves no farther than a few miles from a freshwater source no matter where they are in the state. People love to gravitate toward areas like this. This means that now you have even more witnesses to the paranormal activity directly attributed to the tragic shipwrecks beneath that aqua, blue freshwater waves. Lore and Urban legends So now that we know that the history of its people, the energy of the Michigan Triangle, and the unique geography of the Great Lakes State all lead to the paranormal unfoldings. Which is why the state is full of urban legends and folklore. The Legend of the Nain Rouge: The Nain Rouge is a red-eyed demon who is said to bring misfortune and disaster to Detroit. According to legend, the Nain Rouge first appeared in 1701 and has been seen throughout the city ever since. Some believe that the Nain Rouge is a harbinger of bad luck and should be avoided at all costs. The Dogman: The Dogman is a humanoid creature with the head of a dog that is said to roam the woods of northern Michigan. The legend of the Dogman first appeared in the 1800s and has been the subject of numerous sightings and stories ever since. The Melon Heads: The Melon Heads are a group of humanoid creatures with oversized heads who are said to live in the woods near Felt Mansion in Holland, Michigan. According to legend, the Melon Heads were once children who were experimented on by a mad scientist. The Paulding Light: The Paulding Light is a mysterious light that appears in the woods near Watersmeet, Michigan. The origin of the light is unknown, but some believe that it is the ghost of a railroad brakeman who was killed in the area. The Witch's Castle: The Witch's Castle is an abandoned house in the woods near Lake Michigan that is said to be haunted by the ghost of a witch. According to legend, the witch was burned at the stake in the 1800s and now haunts the area. In Conclusion The combination of all of the history, geographical, and lore of the State of Michigan plus a large number of visitors to the area to lay witness to paranormal unfoldings all contribute to the State of Michigan leading the way as one of the most haunted states in the United States of America. If you would like to find paranormal experiences. First, book the Historical Ghost Lantern Tour in Haunted Traverse City, Michigan. I would be happy to share what ghostly happenings are occurring a stone's throw from the shores of Lake Michigan. Next, check out my top 5 ghost tours in Michigan to hop on here. Last, below are some great tours found on Trip Advisor. I do earn an affiliate commission if you do book one of these tours at no cost to you. Thank you for your support. These funds help me create blog posts and expand the ghost-hunting experiences that I write about. Happy Travels! ~ Desirae, owner & operator of Haunted Traverse Tours.

  • Paranormal Itinerary to Gettysburg

Here is a ghost-hunting itinerary of all things paranormal when visiting Gettysburg National Park in Adams County Pennsylvania. Desirae here! I do the ghost tours in bootiful, Traverse City, Michigan. When I am not doing paranormal tours, I travel worldwide to investigate the strange, weird, and paranormal. I traveled to Gettysburg Pennsylvania, home of the Gettysburg National Park with two sisters (and fellow ghost hunters). This park was formed in 1895 to commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1-3, 1863. The battle was the Union forces against Robert. E Lee's Confederate army. This brutal battle took the lives of over 50,000 soldiers and was a key rallying point for the Union Army (along with Grant's Vicksburg win around this same time). One key factor that tends to be very much the vein of why paranormal happenings occur is because of tragic, violent circumstances. Another is the sudden death of a person at the end of their life. Both of these factors can be found in Gettysburg Pennsylvania's tragic and violent history. This is why many believe Gettysburg National Park and the town are one of the most haunted locations in the United States. So, for any paranormal enthusiast, Gettysburg should be high on your Ghost Investigation Bucket List. Here is a sample travel itinerary of a 4-day and 3-night stay in Gettysburg Pennsylvania to get the most out of your ghost-hunting paranormal experiences! I hope this is helpful! ~Desirae, Haunted Traverse Ghost Tours Day 1: Ghost Hunting Gettysburg. First, book a stay at the Tillie Pierce House Inn. {Booking.com is a helpful tool when booking and you can find some great deals!} Arrive that evening and get settled in at this haunted bed & breakfast. The Tillie Pierce House Inn is accommodating to ghost hunters. When checking in just speak to your attendant about your interest in the paranormal activity happening at the inn. I found my innkeepers Gail and Bob to be very helpful on where and when to ghost hunt the house at night. Here is a quick history of the Tillie Pierce House Inn Haunting unfolding. The Tillie Pierce House was owned by the Pierces during the battle of Gettysburg. With so many casualties, any home available was turned into an impromptu hospital and the Pierce house was no exception. Reports of the hauntings experienced by guests of the B&B include ghostly footsteps, spirits sitting on the beds, and a soldier walking up and down the stairway. My group of hunters experienced some paranormal activity very quickly in our ghost investigation. First, EMF readings responded to our questions. Next, we were able to designate some communication via our spirit box. We stayed in the Lydia Leister Suite where we experienced the best paranormal event of our stay! In the middle of the night, we were awakened by a woman's voice speaking to us. The female spirit said, "Get up." This was spoken right after a very LOUD boom in the ceiling of the room. All three investigators heard this disembodied voice in our room too! It. Was. Perfect :) ****/5 stars for paranormal experience and quality of stay. I would stay again! Day 2: History and Tour of the Gettysburg National Park and the Battlegrounds. Knowing the history of the locations you visit is imperative for a quality ghost hunt, but in Gettysburg, the amazing Civil War history is just as appealing to me as the paranormal activity in the area. After taking breakfast at the Tillie Pierce House Inn, I would suggest you visit the Gettysburg Cyclorama. It can be hard to comprehend the movements of the Union and Confederate forces because of how expansive the locations were for this 3-day battle. This Cyclorama is perfect to get the basics of the hot spots to visit once you get out to the battlegrounds. When visiting the vast battlefields, you will hop in a car to explore the sites or on a vehicle tour. Now you have the general lay of the battlegrounds, it's time to hop on a tour. You can choose the self-guide auto tour (best if you have your own vehicle). We did this one, and again, our biggest regret was not doing the Cyclorama first. The app for the auto tour was easy to use, easy to navigate, and lets you explore at your own pace. No vehicle? No worries. It's time to get on da bus with a bus tour of the grounds. After a full day, of learning the history of the site you are investigating, now it is time to eat a fabulous, historically accurate chicken dinner at the Farnsworth House Inn and check in too! The Farnsworth House Inn is the next location for nights #2 & #3. You are going to want to book in advance when planning your trip! (This itinerary splits nights between 2 B&Bs, but if you can add another location do it! I would recommend the haunted Baladerry Inn) PRO TIP! The actual National Park's grounds do NOT let you ghost hunt day or night. Staying at haunted locations like the recommended Bed and Breakfasts are great locations with several paranormal hauntings unfolding within the B&B's haunted walls. As you will learn through the history tours, the battle was also fought in the town with the Confederates driving the Union forces up to Cemetery Hill. You can still see the bullet holes in some of the buildings! There is one tour company that can get you to a battleground location just outside the GNP, read on for more information on that tour. After an authentic mid-1800s chicken dinner at the Farnsworth House Inn, it's time to hop on a ghost tour at the Farnworth House Inn too! There are a couple to choose from. Great if you can do both! But if you can choose only one, I would opt for the tour of the Farnsworth House, then into the night, I would investigate the house independently. After the Farnsworth Tour, I would book the After Dark Investigations. Locations vary, but on my investigation, our guide took us into The Grove, a woods very near Cemetery Hill where a rare, violent night battle caused both forces to have a significant loss of life. We also were able to investigate Sachs Covered Bridge and Devil's Den. You will need a vehicle to drive to each site! If you have some energy, set up some cameras and do a short investigation in your room and hallways of the Farnsworth House. Day3: Ghost Tours and More Ghost Hunting First, let's talk breakfast. This is an event all to itself at the Farnsworth House. Order it! You won't regret it. Next, sleep in a little and wake up or you can do a ghost hunt session (which is why I recommend staying here 2 nights). Head out to the very busy old town location with a late lunch in the area. I would recommend eating at O-Rorke's Family Eatery. We were able to get a discount when we booked our evening ghost tour with Gettysburg Ghost Tours. After lunch, explore more of the GNP. You can drive around the location and we were told as long as you are WITHIN your vehicle you can do some ghost investigating. There is a self-guided Ghosts of the Battelfield Self-Guided Driving Tour. You can drive and take pictures and some EVP sessions-again, as long as you are WITHIN your car. We did some late evening investigations on some of the opened GNP roads. I cannot stress this enough. It is NOT allowed to ghost hunt the GNP grounds. I was told by everyone in Gettysburg, Park Rangers will confiscate your equipment and you will NOT be getting it back. So ghost hunters hunt at your own risk! Good luck! After an afternoon of exploring the GNP, it's time for dinner at the Dobbin House. If you can get reservations, I would highly recommend this option. This is very popular and for good reason. You are going to love the ambiance and the ghostly stories about this location. I personally loved the display of an Underground Railroad hide-a-way right there in the house that can be viewed after dinner! Ghost Tour Time! Gettysburg has a variety of tour companies. Many will visit hauntings unfolding in the town of Gettysburg and touch on why the town is believed to be haunted. I highly recommend you hop on one to hear the stories coming out of this area. Here is a great list of the tours to choose from. I made a big mistake with booking my ghost tours. Yup, more than one. I booked all three of my ghost tours back-to-back-to-back with Gettysburg Ghost Tour Company (located right across from O'Rourkes Family Eatery). All the tours were provided by the same tour guide with the same sites and stories visited. Oops! Pro Tip! If you are doing more than one walking ghost tour, choose different companies and have fun! After your ghost tour(s), return to the Farnsworth House (which will be a major stop on most tours as well). I would unfold one last late-night investigation or enjoy the outdoor bar on site because of so many reportings of paranormal encounters by Farnworth's guests. Some have seen Confederate Soldiers manifesting in the attic, the location of their demise. And of course, the Farnsworth House was a makeshift hospital with so many operations performed that blood pooled into a red lake in the basement, dripping down on Gettysburg residents sheltering from the fight. Some of the experiences we encountered here were a shadow figure that presented for several moments before walking away from our group and disappearing on the main level of the original house. (The house has been added on through the years so try to get a room in the original part of the house). My room and the stairway leading up to the attic on the second level had some SRS Camera readings and someone, maybe the Confederate Soldiers that passed in the attic, were making themselves known. Day 4: Breakfast and Hershey's Chocolate Factory? Grab another delicious breakfast from Farnsworth House. Then, to decompress from your intense ghost investigations, may I recommend the Hershey Chocolate Factory? My team visited this location on our way out of the area. It's located a short drive from Gettysburg. It was fun and delicious. In summary: With the profound and tragic history of Gettysburg, I would be shocked if no one encountered paranormal activity while visiting. during your stay here, give yourself time to speak with the locals, their experiences are incredible. Good luck with your ghost hunting, Gettysburg is a paranormal and historical site not to be missed.
