Ireland is a land of ancient legends, crumbling ruins, and ghost stories passed down through generations. With roughly 30,000 castles and ruins scattered across the Emerald Isle, it's no surprise that some have earned reputations as some of the most haunted places in Europe.

Whether you're planning a paranormal road trip through Ireland or simply love a good ghost story, these castles offer something unique: documented histories, centuries of folklore, and in several cases, the chance to spend the night where the spirits are said to roam.

Here are eight of the most haunted castles in Ireland that visitors can visit or tour—and in many cases, stay overnight.

Blarney Castle is Haunted in Ireland
Blarney Castle is 8 Km northwest of Cork City Ireland (I am pretty chucked at finally visiting as you can tell)

1. Leap Castle (County Offaly)

Often called the most haunted castle in Ireland, Leap Castle has a dark and violent history stretching back centuries.

The castle's most infamous location is the Bloody Chapel. According to local history, a power struggle between two brothers of the O'Carroll clan ended when one brother murdered the other—a priest—in the chapel during Mass. Visitors and paranormal investigators have long reported strange sounds, sudden cold spots, and feelings of dread in this area.

Leap Castle is also famous for a mysterious entity known as "The Elemental," described by witnesses as a sinister presence accompanied by an overwhelming smell of sulfur and decay.

Can You Visit?

Yes. Guided visits are offered by arrangement with the current owners.

Can You Stay Overnight?

No overnight accommodations are generally available within the castle itself.

2. Kinnitty Castle (County Offaly)

Nestled near the Slieve Bloom Mountains, Kinnitty Castle is one of Ireland's best-known haunted castle hotels.

Its most famous ghost is known as the Monk of Kinnitty. Guests and staff have reported seeing a hooded monk wandering hallways and banquet rooms before mysteriously disappearing. The figure is often described as appearing solid enough to be mistaken for a living person.

Other guests have reported hearing unexplained crying, footsteps, and sightings of a woman and child in the castle's historic rooms.

Can You Visit?

Yes. Guided history tours are available at this castle.

Can You Stay Overnight?

Absolutely. Kinnitty operates as a castle hotel, making it one of Ireland's most accessible haunted overnight experiences.

3. Ballygally Castle (County Antrim)

Perched along Northern Ireland's dramatic coastline, Ballygally Castle is widely considered the most haunted hotel in Northern Ireland.

The castle's resident spirit is Lady Isabella Shaw. According to legend, she was imprisoned in a tower room by her husband after giving birth to a daughter. Shortly afterward, she fell—or was pushed—from a window to her death.

Today, guests report hearing unexplained knocking on doors, seeing a female apparition in period clothing, and experiencing sudden cold drafts. Some even claim to have encountered a mysterious green mist within the castle grounds.

Can You Visit?

Yes.

Can You Stay Overnight?

Yes. Ballygally Castle operates as a luxury hotel. Brave guests can even visit the famous "Ghost Room."

4. Cabra Castle (County Cavan)

Cabra Castle is frequently listed among Ireland's most haunted castle hotels.

The most famous ghost story involves a servant girl named Sarah. According to local legend, she fell in love with a member of the castle's family but was forbidden from the relationship. Sarah was eventually executed, and her spirit is said to remain on the grounds.

Guests have reported hearing the cries of an infant, seeing unexplained shadows, and sensing an unseen presence near the historic Hanging Tree associated with Sarah's story.

Can You Visit?

Yes.

Can You Stay Overnight?

Yes. The castle operates as a luxury hotel and wedding venue.

5. Kilkea Castle (County Kildare)

Dating back to the 12th century, Kilkea Castle is one of Ireland's oldest inhabited castles.

Its most famous ghost is Gerald Fitzgerald, the 11th Earl of Kildare, better known as the Wizard Earl. Legend claims he practiced magic and alchemy within the castle walls.

According to folklore, the Wizard Earl returns every seven years riding a white horse, circling the castle grounds before vanishing once again. Guests have reported unexplained sightings and strange sensations around the historic estate.

Can You Visit?

Yes.

Can You Stay Overnight?

Yes. Kilkea Castle is now a luxury resort and hotel.

👻 Haunted Destinations to Explore

Haunted travel doesn’t stop here. I’m continuing to explore some of the most paranormally active destinations across the U.S., including Savannah, Salem, Charleston, and beyond.

6. Ross Castle (County Meath)

Ross Castle is tied to one of Ireland's most tragic ghost legends.

The story centers on Sabina Nugent, daughter of Lord Richard Nugent. Sabina fell deeply in love with a local Irish chieftain. When he drowned under mysterious circumstances, grief consumed her. According to legend, she fell into a deep sleep and never awakened.

Visitors and locals have long claimed that Sabina's spirit still wanders the castle grounds, searching for her lost love.

Can You Visit?

Yes. Guided tours are on a first come first come basis to explore the tower house. Tickets can only be booked at the castle reception.

Can You Stay Overnight?

Limited accommodations may be available through private bookings and special events.

7. Clontarf Castle (Dublin)

Standing on the historic grounds associated with the famous Battle of Clontarf, this castle combines luxury accommodations with centuries of ghost stories. Some say that Bram Stoker's story settings were inspired by this particular castle.

Guests have reported unexplained footsteps, flickering lights, electrical disturbances, and sightings of figures dressed in medieval clothing. One frequently repeated account involves televisions and showers turning on and off without explanation.

The castle's long history, combined with its location near one of Ireland's most significant battles, has helped fuel countless paranormal tales.

Can You Visit?

Yes. Best time is Halloween with the celebration nearby of the Bram Stoker Festival.

Can You Stay Overnight?

Yes. Clontarf Castle operates as a luxury hotel just outside Dublin.

8. Charleville Castle (County Offaly)

Often overlooked by travelers, Charleville Castle is one of Ireland's most investigated paranormal locations.

The castle's most famous ghost is believed to be Harriet, an eight-year-old girl who died after falling down the castle's grand staircase in the 1800s.

Visitors, staff, and paranormal teams have reported hearing children's laughter, seeing shadowy figures, and experiencing unexplained phenomena throughout the castle. Harriet's spirit is said to be especially active near the staircase where she died.

Can You Visit?

Yes. Guided tours are offered regularly.

Can You Stay Overnight?

Occasionally through special paranormal events and investigations. Some camping is allowed during festivals such as Castlepolooza or Shakefest.
